pretty lights - passing by behind your eyes

pretty lights - passing by behind your eyes

The morning dubstep set Max Ulis (following a rather drunken ‘performance’ by Benga) threw down at the Living Room / Beach stage @ Shambhala was one of those perfect times.places.people moments that still makes me smile to think of.

This track in particular captures the moment for me:

max ulis – i dont like you (this is a crappy low bitrate version (96kbps), a better version can be purchased from http://maxulis.com/ )

Also — on a “fucking fantastic news” tip, Pretty Lights have released a new (STILL FREE) album, “Passing By Behind Your Eyes” available here: http://prettylightsmusic.com or download directly from my server (they were having huge problems earlier with their website getting overloaded from people downloading the album –  http://photism.org/PrettyLights-PassingByBehindYourEyes.zip )

Here’s a taste… I really haven’t listened to the whole album enough to pick out a favourite (the whole album is great) so don’t take this as my opinion on which are the  greatest tracks of this album…. I’m still infatuated with the whole thing :)

pretty lights – Keep Em Bouncin

I can’t wait to see Pretty Lights live @ Nectar Lounge in Seattle on Oct 17th…. should be abso-frickin-lutely amazing.

a field left fallow flourishes next season

Kind of enjoying the beginning of fall… not the weather, certainly, but more my rejuvenated enthusiasm for getting focused on my various projects, and desire to strive for that barely attainable, and rarely maintainable balance in life… Already had more movement on my various projects in the past couple weeks than I had over the course of the whole summer… time to get some progress on things that really truly actually satisfy and make me feel like I’ve accomplished something worthwhile. (Not that carousing and other socialness doesn’t provide some elements of what I need to be happy… but it needs to be balanced with actual progress in other areas)

I’ve really been liking this band “The xx” recently…. the bass lines kind of reminded me of Fujiya & Miyagi. (Whether the association is actually valid is up in the air. I don’t feel like checking and proving or [more likely] disproving the actual correctness of my comparison) They manage to pull off the duet structure without annoying the shit out of me which is pretty impressive.

And this Born Ruffians track is catchy and makes me wish I’d shown up a bit earlier and heard their set when they were opening for that Caribou show I went to on halloween a couple (or was it maybe… 3 years) ago in Victoria… speaking of halloween I hope there’s something as good as that show this year, I haven’t seen anything that has stuck out yet as far as things to do. This year I actually have  a costume idea ready… Which is pretty unusual for me (the exception being last year maybe… but I’m not really sure if I can take credit for it I’m pretty sure it was due to a combination of my g/f at the times efforts, and my accidentally taking home an elaborate and bejewelled jacket that just begged to be encostumed)

born ruffians – foxes mate for life

Not really sure why all the songs that seemed to fit together for this are love-oriented… not going to read too much into that…   fallow, fellow….  fallow…  ;-)

So this is probably my favourite track right now for bombing to work in the morning on my bike:

(highly recommend having headphones / speakers with good bass and turning this one up a bit to get the proper effect)

chase and status – pieces (feat. plan b)

It’s probably a bit crazy, but I totally dig listening to something like this and kind of channeling that feeling this song brings up in you to induce a rush of adrenaline and rip the shit out of whatever I’m doing, riding my bike or going for a run or whatever. Kind of drawing up the feeling from the tiny bits of yourself and your life that are aligned with the song and using them, suspending the rest of how you feel for a minute and just letting those parts, with a liberal application of imagination, take over. There’s certainly no way I only “remember when I used to feel something,” but it’s an interesting idea/feeling…. Plus it kind of works when your legs are burning as you attack your nemesis-hill on your cycling route, and you can give it a big ‘Fuck off you can’t do shit to me anymore, I’m going to crest you in record time.’  K so I think the trolley trip into the land of make-believe is over, I’m…uhh.. gonna go now. hahaha

Here’s some of the sickest most inspiring shit I’ve heard recently… stumbled upon the fact that the Kid Koala show on this coming Wednesday is not just him (which would be good anyways, but maybe not good enough to get me out on a Wednesday), but his new project The Slew… check this shit out, it blew me away:

Not only does that kick ass, they are distributing their album for FREE so you can hear it before you go to the show. Here’s a link to the blog post that has the link for the full album:

http://nufonia.com/ice-cream-news/theslew/

This is pretty much the perfect combination of that rock vibe with turntable-ism and beats…  Kid Koala + Dyanmite D on 6 turntables w/ Chris Ross and Myles Heskett of Palace of Fire (and previously of Wolfmother) on bass, drums and keyboards…. sounds fucking brilliant, bet it’s going to kick ass live.

tickets (show moved from commodore to the red room.. not sure how I feel about that… commodore has amazing sound, but red room might be more intimate)

(Oh yeah I got tired of not ever getting the time to fix  the last theme I had for the blog so I just switched it to this super simple one…  I’m a huge purist when it comes to website designs, really the less pictures used the happier I am… all type == clean & awesome to me.. so this might not be the final design but it’s a better interim design than the last one. So little time… looking forward to having more time in the Fall… ) :)
