Must post this before I get incredibly tired of it by listening too many times.

Oh and while we’re on the subject

empire of the sun – walking on a dream (LAZRtag remix)

Here’s why I haven’t been posting anything EVER lately.

http://showsavant.com

Check it out ! Informs you when anyone you listen to comes to your city. (Make an account & scan your itunes/mp3 collection — and don’t worry, it’s all kept private, no one else can see those embarrassing mp3s that you (and everyone) have) ;)

If you’re too lazy to scan your collection it’s at least one of the less convoluted sources for shows — most sites it just ain’t easy to see what’s coming up (more pages & clicks means more ads etc for them to force on you). You can also check out what’s going on in other cities you might be visiting! Cities get their own url — http://showsavant.com/vancouver, http://showsavant.com/montreal (related excitement –I’m going to Montreal for my first time ever later this month!!! wooo), etc, or you can click “change city” on the top right corner.

Still pretty new so still lots of cool features are on their way. (iPhone app, maybe facebook integration, optional notifications when artists post new myspace songs, etc., etc., etc.)

I’ve missed so many smaller bands/artists coming to town either because I didn’t have time to sift through the 400 event invites in my inbox, didn’t have time to keep up with their myspace page, or they weren’t headlining so weren’t even listed on the usual event/news sites.

So check it out, comments welcome, and please use the itunes/mp3 scanner! Bands aren’t tracked unless *someone* actually cares enough to add them by a scan/search — so that the site doesn’t become muddied up with a bunch of shows for bands none of the users actually care about.

Thanks!

block out

23/01/2010

Music to block out that guy in the corners mouth noises (sometimes I get more work done at a cafe away from distractions of my home… sometimes not haha):

florence and the machine – you’ve got the love (the xx remix)

Audio clip: Adobe Flash Player (version 9 or above) is required to play this audio clip. Download the latest version here. You also need to have JavaScript enabled in your browser.

This remix of Florence and the Machine by the xx [yes yes I’ve already posted tracks by them, but remixes are different right?] is ammmmazing… I was lucky enough to catch the free show at Zulu records recently. While I don’t think you’ll find anyone saying their music is crazy ground breaking, technically difficult, or that they are amazing musicians, but they have something that, when combined with the minimalist composition, and their almost hesitant performances, lets them get away with duets of all things. ;-) The fact that their remixes are so well done seems indicative of a true understanding of musical composition rather than a just-by-luck stumbling upon a pleasing formula, and hopefully we see further remixes.

The twelves have also been doing some good remix work too, on top of their own material, they came to Van recently and I wish I’d gone to see them, but it was a Sunday, and a lazy one at that if I remember correctly… ;) There’s a million remixes of radiohead but really, why stop now haha

radiohead – reckoner (twelves remix)

And wow, just wow, this shit is hilarious, dj parker remixes caspa w/ a bunch of ridiculousness, but it’s kind of actually awesome, I could definitely dig some good crossover like this in dubstep like Parov Stelars (and others) jazz/30s/house fusion was to house music. [Which… somehow… I haven’t posted any of yet… okay coming soon.]

dj parker – wheres my monkey

nouveaux banjeaux

11/01/2010

I seem to have been cultivating  an unabashed love of banjo in tracks lately… And given my laziness lately I figure I should drop them all at once into a giant mega-post ode to the banjo ;-) [and just good to get the ball rolling again since I haven’t posted in ages]

I think the tipping point was Le Loup’s album “The throne of the third heaven of the nations’ millennium general assembly”…. Looking back it seems I never posted any tracks? How could this be…!! It was certainly one of my favourite albums of this year (although it was released in 2007) The album is a TRIP, it absolutely needs to be listened to all at once to get a full sense of it. It’s fucking beautiful.

le loup – to the stars! to the night!

This next track highlights the more electronic sound that also exists on that album (yes, getting side-tracked,  slightly, but it’s just too good to not discuss)

le loup – we are gods! we are wolves!

Next up on the banjo train, hexes & ohs awesome track little bird [thanks for sending this, Briana!]

hexes and ohs – little bird

Next up, Freelance Whales… this album reminded Postal Service, but not in a bad/ripoff way (the singer mostly I think)… The whole album “Weathervanes” is pretty solid, here’s a couple from it:

freelance whales – generator ^ first floor

And, finally (I think…) to leave on an awesome and hilarious note this banjolele-ified mashup by Mr. B. The Gentleman Rhymer, “Chap-Hop History”:

Go here for more of the same:

Anyways, cheers to a new year!
